Our age is characterized by a proliferation of congresses and symposia which are concerned with developments occurring in many areas of science. It seemsappropriate, therefore, to ask ourselves at the beginning of this meeting: why another congress? In particular, Why a congress on the somatomedins (Sms)? The answer comes from an examination of the reasons which prompted this
symposium. It is evident that in recent years much effort has been expended in studies of the somatomedins. This has had the dual effect of producing indisputable advances in our knowledge and of raising important new questions which Warrant further study. The essence of a successful symposium is that there is an assiduous and profitable exchange of information and a comparison of the experience of interested investigators.
